Much of the shows' filming actually took place in New York City and the city's underworld heavies were realistically portrayed.
The three N.Y.P.D. plain-clothes detectives were: Mike Haines, an 18-years on the force, experienced Detective; Johnny Corso, the younger Detective and Jeff Ward, the third Detective of the group. Together they tracked down extortionists, drug dealers, bombers, murderers, rapists and other lowly sorts from the Bowery to Wall Street, the Empire State Building to Shubert Alley, Greenwich Village to Times Square.
The series was commended by real-life Mayor John Lindsay, who had permitted filming in City Hall. N.Y.P.D. was produced with the cooperation of the New York Police Department and was based on actual cases.
